Update on Homelife (#)

„I knocked the cable modem off the computer just as my mother was coming up the stairs. I'd unplugged my brother's headphones from the back of the computer and I was clumsy, and as I re-attached the wires, my mother stopped in the doorway and said in this ridiculous voice that was charged with drama and A-HA! I'VE CAUGHT YOU NOW! triumph: "What are you doing?" My explanation had barely left my mouth before she was doing her classic 'disbelieving laughter' and saying "YOU EXPECT ME TO BELIEVE THAT?" as if plugging in the coaxial to a cable modem was actually some clever trickery I'd devised and just because she didn't believe what I said I was doing didn't mean that I hadn't done SOMETHING.“

Online music dilemmas. (#)

„Yes, all the formats are what are called "lossy formats," meaning you trade off sound quality for a smaller file. However, the high-encoded bitrates for these songs are better than good enough for the average music lover who listens to CDs in their midrange car audio system or on their computer speakers or Panasonic headphones. They can't tell the difference. (Yes, Ogg Vorbis is "lossless," supposedly, but none of the stores currently support it.) As much as audiophiles really can hear the difference, the average listener cannot, and that's the majority of music lovers.“

Its Alive! (#)

„I didn't bring mine from home with me and because I don't have a CD player or anything it has kind of sucked not to have music. I can listen to music on my computer with my headphones or on my portable MiniDisc player I bought when I first got here, but its always nice to have speakers. So I went out and bought some yesterday, along with a surge protector because I have so much stuff plugged into one outlet that my breakers are blowing all the time. So far with the surge protector they are ok.“

Techno-gadget trash (#)

„Often purchased in a well-intentioned bout of self-improvement, they are opened, used once or twice, then abandoned." I am realizing this is why my house is so cluttered. I've gone through so many pairs of headphones, computers, computer accessories, and other things that it seems ridiculous. When I see the latest Palm or Sony Clie out that I want, I remind myself that I've had two which I used for maybe a total of 2 months in the past 5 years.“

I Pod, You Pod (#)

„Consider the utopian ideal presented by the iPod and all its disciples: your own badass self, hilariously uncomfortable 'ear bud' headphones jammed into your head, with 5,000 of your favorite songs dumped into a cigarette-pack-size computer set on 'shuffle' so you can veer erratically from King Tubby to King's X to King Missile's 'Detachable Penis' as you pick up the dry cleaning. Radio has failed you. Portable CD players limited you.“

Leaving Berlin (#)

„I bump into a "Telecom Italia" lounge-style area. It has six Windows terminals and some nice red couches with plugs for power, Ethernet and head phones (3,5mm so that standard computer headphones don't fit, oh my). And: there is a wireless network as well. But logging in is prohibited: the router blocks me because - as the helpless girls at the info counter put it - I am not a Telecom Italia customer.“

Some Modern Dinosaurs may be a bit Closer to Extinction (#)

„I expect to see a lot more headphones on folks while they are at their computers (or just a wireless signal away) and not just to listen to the latest music downloads. Check out this article about Skype, the latest hot peer-to-peer application that will be making a lot of encumbent telephone companies (both land and cellular) nervous and will...“

Sound check (#)

„When using headphones, it is only wise to check to see if the things are actually plugged in, lest you think that nobody else can hear your odd sense of tuneage and, in reality, it’s blaring loudly enough from your computer speakers to be heard past your earphones (and, thus, outward to the office beyond).“

Broken Toe (#)

„Around 10:30 PM Michele told me there was something going on outside with police & fire people. I usually wear headphones at the computer and hadn't heard anything. I went outside in the rain to see what was going with all hubbub. There was a fire at an apartment building a few hundred feet from our house.“
